Protests
Protests
Round 1
Question 9 - We asked about a surprising connection between Al Sharpton
and Strom Thurmond. Sam of Footloose and Firkin Free answered "They shared
a common ancestor", saying that "this is how the story was presented in the
news". We scanned several dozen news headlines, none of which claimed that
Sharpton and Thurmond are related, but many of which report that Sharpton
is seeking DNA testing to determine whether there is any kinship relation.
Therefore we conclude that all that has been claimed so far is that one
of Sharpton's ancestors was owned by one of Thurmond's ancestors, which
was the expected answer. Protest denied.
Question 10 - We asked about an unusual find in a rooming house, namely
approximately 100 dead sheep. Stephan of Reach for the Tap protested
"sheepskins". This would have been deemed close enough in any case, but
in fact, according to news reports, someone was indeed skinning a sheep
when the police arrived. Protest accepted for 2 points.
Round 4
Question 4 - We asked for the Blue Jay with the "lowest career ERA (3.42).
This player was a Blue Jay 1984-92." We expected Jimmy Key, but Steve of
Forza Azzurri gave "Henke" as a team answer. This one was our fault for
not explicitly specifying "starter" in the question (though in our defense,
the career ERA stat is generally read as starters-only, or minimum 1000
innings pitched). Since we did leave that out, Tom "the Terminator" Henke
is a reasonable guess, and by some measures he does have the lowest ERA
of any career Jays pitcher (if you include closers), with 2.48. Also his
years as a Jay are similar to Jimmy Key's, as specified in the question.
Taking all this into account, protest accepted for 1 point.
Round 9
Question 9 - We described the Boyoma Falls and asked for their old name,
which, we said, "honored a British explorer". For an empty-seat team
answer, Five of What? said "Livingstone", and when the answer Stanley
(Falls) was revealed, they complained that Stanley was American.
Henry Morton Stanley's home was indeed in the US during his exploring
years, but he was a British expatriate for most of that time. He did
take out US citizenship eventually, only to move back to Britain a few
years later, where he resumed British nationality (and was knighted and
elected to Parliament). Admittedly "British explorer" was a careless
wording, and it may have been inadvertently misleading to some extent,
but it isn't wrong, even if some sources do claim him as American.
There actually is a set of Livingstone Falls on the Congo River
as well as the former Stanley Falls, and they do come close to meeting the
general physical description we gave. But they are not the Boyoma Falls,
they have not been renamed, and they are not the place where name of the
river changes. This answer is not close enough; protest denied.
Round 10
Question C2 - Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury; that
is, the height of a mercury column whose base develops the indicated
pressure. (If your blood pressure has ever been taken using a mercury
sphygmomanometer, you can see that the scale is simply in millimeters.)
Jim of Unnatural Axxe protested "millibar", saying it's the same thing.
In fact a millibar is a pressure of 1000 dynes (that is, the force that
would accelerate a mass of 1 gram at 1 cm/s²) per cm². A blood pressure of
120/80 would be about 160/107 if the units were millibars. Protest denied.
