Protests
Round 4
Question 1 - on the Snell's Law question, two players did not say the
word "refraction" but gave decent descriptions of it instead.
Good enough: protests accepted. 2 points instead of 1 for for Rick
of On a Roll and Richard of Frayed Naughts.
Question 4 - Selwyn of Sam's Spades gave "Boolean algebra" instead of
"De Morgan's Laws". The subject is Boolean algebra, but we did say in
the preamble that all answers would be of the form "Smith's Law(s)"
unless such a phrase occurred in the question, and De Morgan's Laws
have the specific meaning described. Protest denied.
Question 10 - Stephan of Reach for the Tap said "mol" instead of
"Avogadro's Law". It is true that a mole or mol consists of
Avogadro's number of molecules, but the word is derived from
"molecule" and is not the name of an Italian scientist. In addition,
again, this answer is not in the indicated form. Protest denied.
Round 6
Question 5 - We asked for the body of water that Black Creek in Toronto
flows into. It flows into the Humber River, which in turn flows into
Lake Ontario. Three players named Lake Ontario, two claiming that
a river does not qualify as a "body of water" and one stating that
the lake was the "ultimate body of water."
As to "body of water", we looked at a number of dictionaries both
online and in print. This definition from the online Merriam-Webster
is typical: "body", sense 3a: "a mass of matter distinct from other
masses <a body of water>". Some dictionaries do imply that a compact
mass like a lake is a more typical usage, so to that extent the
question was misleading and we apologize for the choice of words,
but it's clear that "body of water" can indeed include a river, as we
intended it to. And anyway, the entire City of Toronto -- which was
mentioned explicitly in the question -- drains directly or indirectly
into Lake Ontario, so it would have been ridiculous to ask for that.
After careful consideration, protests denied for Barrie of MI5,
Al of Sam's Spades, and Dee of Reach for the Tap.
Round 9
Question 6 - Hugh of the Firkins said "Bonne Cop, Bon Cop". The title
was in fact "Bon Cop, Bad Cop", and in any case the player was
also supposed to say whether it won Best Picture or 9 other Genies.
Protest denied.
Round 10
Question B2 - We asked what D-Day really means in military jargon.
It's the starting date of an operation; the "D" just stands for Day.
(Similarly H-Hour is used for the starting time.) Ed of Five Guys
Named Moe said "the day that troops are deployed" and then had
"deployment day" written down as his protest. "Deployment day"
sounds like an attempt to expand "D-Day" as an abbreviation, and by
itself would have been ruled wrong; but we asked for the meaning,
not the etymology, and "the day that troops are deployed" is close
enough to "the starting date". It's a close call, but we'll accept
the protest based for 2 points based on the answer actually given,
and so the steal by Tony of Sam's Spades is nullified.
