Round 2
Question 8. We asked about the "body of law" that was invoked to make
Philip/Philippe V the King of France in 1316. Al of Sam's Spades
answered "primogeniture" for 1 point. This word has two meanings:
it's either the rule that the firstborn son inherits, or the rule that
the firstborn child inherits. It's not a "body of law", and it doesn't
say what happens if there is no such child; for example, in some cases
when primogeniture is the rule, nobody would inherit. In this case the
previous king had no son and Philip V was his uncle. Protest denied.
This is kind of an interesting story, so here's a bit more detail.
King Louis X died in June 1316. He had a daughter, Jeanne, and
his wife Clemence was pregnant. There was some question of whether
Salic Law was the correct body of law to apply to the inheritance; if
not, Jeanne might have become queen. But in the end it was decided
that Salic Law did apply, and that meant females were completely
ineligible. However, a posthumous son was eligible to inherit, so
the throne remained vacant until November when Clemence gave birth.
When the child proved to be a boy, he became King John/Jean I at birth.
But he only lived 5 days. As the new king had died without issue,
and Jeanne was still ineligible under Salic Law, the throne now passed
to Louis's brother, John's uncle, who became Philip V.
Round 4
Question 3. We asked what disease is most commonly transferred to
humans from birds, but we neglected to say living birds. Salmonella is
often caught from undercooked chicken and is a good deal more common
than psittacosis. Protest accepted for Jane of Unnatural Axxe and Tony
of Cellar Rats, 1 point each.
Round 7
Question 8. For the sign that showed the city name crossed out, we
asked for the general meaning that would be the same no matter what city
was mentioned. "Leaving the city limits" does not apply, since it still
relates to the specific city. Protest denied for Tony of Cellar Rats
and Diana of Clueless.
Question 10. The exclamation-mark sign is a general caution sign
used when a more specific symbol isn't available. But we decided that
"caution" alone would be a sufficient answer, and "pay attention" means
essentially the same thing. So, protest accepted for Craig of Cellar
Rats and Gord of the Firkins, both for 2 instead of 1.
