Protests
Round 1
Question 6 - We asked, "A Canadian-led genetic study has recently led
to the identification of genetic mutations linked to what condition?"
Patrick of On a Roll said MS (multiple sclerosis). There was indeed a
recent news story on a Canadian study relating to MS, but what it was
about was the prospect of a treatment based on the hormone prolactin.
We searched for some other story about the genetic causes of the disease,
but didn't find one, so: protest denied.
Round 6
No protest was involved, but we'll confess to an error: we should not
have asked for Albuquerque, as it is not a state capital. The map was
right: city 13 was Santa Fe. Fortunately they're only about 50 miles
apart, with no other capitals nearby.
Round 10
Question B1 - We asked how many actors have played the Doctor on as
a regular part on the TV series Doctor Who, but we mistakenly counted
one who was only in a 1996 TV-movie. The correct answer was 9, so we
should have accepted 8 to 10. Protest accepted for Brent of Clueless
for 2 points, and Stan of Five of What? for 1 point on a steal.
Question F2 - We asked what record for a nonstop flight was set by
Jeana Yeager and Dick Rutan in December 1986. The answer "first to
go around the world" is technically wrong, as this was accomplished
decades earlier by military aircraft using in-flight refueling; but the
QM was instructed, if this answer was given, to say explain this and say
"more specific", seeking the answer "first to go around the world without
refueling". At one game where the technically wrong answer was given,
the QM misunderstood the instruction and rejected it. Protest accepted,
2 points for Dave of Footloose and Firkin Free, who end up losing by 1
since Stan's protest was also accepted.
