Game 4, Round 9 (Entertainment): 100 Years... 100 Movie Quotes
This is a bonus round. Each of these lines of dialogue was selected for
the American Film Institute's TV special "100 Years... 100 Movie Quotes".
For each line, there are three things we might ask about: the actor or
actress (we'll just say "the performer" from now on), the character,
the movie. Sometimes we'll ask you for two of those, sometimes just one.
When you give a correct answer, whether for 1 point or 2, the QM will
tell you it's correct, and you then have the opportunity to go for the
bonus by giving the remaining parts of the answer, so all three parts
have been given.
Example:
QM says "'Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.' We need any two
of the performer, the character, and the movie."
Player says "Clark Gable in Gone with the Wind."
QM says "Correct. Can you earn the bonus?"
Player says "Rhett Butler."
QM says "Correct for 3 points." (Or 2 points if it was a team answer.)
You always need to complete all three parts of the answer for the bonus,
even if we only asked for one part originally.
1. Ranked #14 in the list of 100: "The stuff that dreams are made of."
This is not a Shakespeare movie. Give any two of the performer,
the character, and the movie, for the regular score.
Humphrey Bogart
Sam Spade
The Maltese Falcon (1941)
2. Ranked #3: "You don't understand! I coulda had class. I coulda been
a contender. I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is
what I am, let's face it." Again, give any two of the performer,
the character, and the movie, for the regular score.
Marlon Brando
Terry Malloy
On the Waterfront (1954)
3. #26: "Why don't you come up sometime and see me?" This time just name
any one for the regular score: the performer, the character, or
the movie.
Mae West
Lady Lou
She Done Him Wrong (1933)
4. #18: "Made it, Ma! Top of the world!" Again, give any one for the
regular score: the performer, the character, or the movie.
Arthur "Cody" Jarrett
James Cagney
White Heat (1949)
5. #16: The line "They call me Mr. Tibbs!" became the title of a sequel,
but we want the original movie where it was spoken. For the regular
score just give the title.
Sidney Poitier
Virgil Tibbs
In the Heat of the Night (1967) <- for regular score
6. #6: "Go ahead... make my day!" Again, for the regular score just
name the title.
Clint Eastwood
"Dirty" Harry Callahan
Sudden Impact (1983) <- for regular score
7. The AFI web page gives #30 as "I want to be alone." Some reputable
sources agree, while others insist that the line ends with "to be
let alone" or "left alone". In any case, name any two of the
performer, the character, and the movie for the regular score.
Greta Garbo
Mme. Grusinskaya
Grand Hotel (1932)
8. #56: "A boy's best friend is his mother." Give any two of the
performer, the character, and the movie for the regular score.
Anthony Perkins
Norman Bates
Psycho (1960)
9. #53: "One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got in my
pajamas, I don't know." For the regular score name any one: the
performer, the character, or the movie.
Groucho Marx
Capt. Jeffrey T. Spaulding
Animal Crackers (1930)
10. For #15 we want the person who says this first, not the ones who
repeat it (and incidentally change the wording a bit). The line is:
"I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!"
Again, name any one for the regular score: the performer, the
character, or the movie.
Peter Finch
Howard Beale
Network (1976)
