Tenth, and Final Week's Protests
We had a few problems with round 6. Sorry.
- Round 6, question 2
- Muskeg is ACCEPTED for bog. One point to Marion (Firkins), Steph
(Taps), Mark (Usual Suspects). Wetland is too generic, and Swamps
are generally characterized by very slow-moving waters, often
rich in tannins from decaying vegetation. In the southern US they
are called Bayous. Bogs are stagnant with spongy wet ground. The
two-point responses of Mark and Steph are DENIED.
- Round 6, question 4.
- To quote one of our sources; A mangrove is a physical location
where trees and shrubs grow in saline coastal habitats. The word
is used in at least three senses, (1) most broadly to refer to
the habitat and entire plant assemblage or mangal
"A Mangrove is
a specific wide variety of plant species, not one type of tree
that can be found in mangrove habitat, but of the recognized 110
species only about 54 species in 20 genera, from 16 families
constitute the "true mangroves" , species that occur almost
exclusively in mangrove habitats and rarely elsewhere".
Because
the habitats are sometimes called Mangrove swamps or forests we
will give the points but it is not the tree itself that is the
mangrove but the habitat these trees and shrubs that can grow
with their roots totally submersed in saline water and not rot
but thrive. The protest of swamp is ACCEPTED. Two points for Jill
(Taps), one for Mike (Cellar Rats), Rodney (Usual Suspects). A
bayou is a small, slow-moving stream or creek; this protest was
superseded by the one above.
- Round 6, question 5.
- A butte is smaller than a mesa, and is formed differently, a
butte by erosion, and a mesa by tectonic activity and then
erosion. Our question does not specifically exclude butte, so, in
the spirit of the upcoming holiday season, the protest is
ACCEPTED. Two points for Barrie (MI5), and Isobel (5 of
What?). Hoodoos are column-like where a mesa is large and flat,
which does preclude them. Protest DENIED. No points for Paul
(All Over Twisted).
- Round 6 Question 9.
- A caldera is a volcanic feature formed by the collapse of a
volcano into itself, making it a large, special form of volcanic
crater. The word 'caldera' comes from a Spanish word meaning
"cauldron". Because the word crater is in the full definition,
even though there are many types of craters and not all craters
are calderas, the protest is ACCEPTED. 2 points for Tony (Sam's
Spades).
- Round 6, Question 10.
- Although an artesian well has to have a man-made hole to create
the well, a naturally occurring Aquifer is required. Even though
it is not exactly right for the definition, the end-of-season
spirit will prevail, and the protest is ACCEPTED. 2 points for
Kerry (Frayed Naughts). Kerry's second response, cauldron is
incorrect, but was superseded by the one above anyway.
- Round 8 Question 4.
- Chicago Bulls won the 1993 NBA Championship. Protest
ACCEPTED. Two points awarded to David (Firkins) and Al (Sam's
Spades).
- Round 9, question 4.
- Charles V (24 February 1500 - 21 September 1558) was ruler of the
Burgundian territories (1506-1555), King of Castile (1516-1556),
King of Aragon (1516-1556), King of Naples and Sicily
(1516-1554), Archduke of Austria (1519-1521), King of the Romans
(or German King), (1519-1531) and Holy Roman Emperor
(1530-1556). Charles V was the son of Philip the Handsome and
Joanna the Maid of Castile. His maternal grandparents were
Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, whose marriage
had first united Spain. Protest ACCEPTED. One point awarded to
Mike (Cellar Rats). Sorry, question was incorrect in its premise.
- Round 10, question A1.
- The Pampas (from Quechua, meaning "plain") are the fertile South
American lowlands that include the Argentine provinces of Buenos
Aires, La Pampa, Santa Fe, and Córdoba, most of Uruguay, and the
southernmost end of Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul, covering more than
750,000 km² (290,000 square miles). Protest DENIED. No points
for Rodney (Usual Suspects).
