* Round 1, Current Events * Question 1: "Canada's inflation rate hit a 12-year high in January, it was announced last week. To what level did it rise?" -- expected answer 4.5%. David of Footloose and Firkin Free protested "4.3%" for 1. He said he remembered hearing about a speech where (former Bank of Canada governor John) Crow said that a rate of 4.3% was too high. Crow did give a speech to the Economic Club on February 25 http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/ArticleNews/TPPrint/LAC/20030226/RCROW/TPBusiness/ but the January Consumer Price Index was not announced until February 27, so this is clearly irrelevant. If Crow mentioned a rate of 4.3%, he would have been talking about November, the previous high. The 4.5% rate can be confirmed at http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/ArticleNews/TPPrint/LAC/20030304/RMIKE/TPBusiness/ Protest denied.
* Round 3, Science: Playing Mendeleyev * The preamble said "All you have to do is tell us the names of some of the elements we've removed from the [handout periodic] table". Most of the questions just gave an element by atomic number. Question 10 read "Element 57. Hint: Consider the other name for the rare earth series" -- expected answer "lanthanum". Vic of MI5 protested "lanthanide" for 1, claiming that the question "did not exclude" this answer. The question was clear enough; we explicitly said that the part about the rare earth series (whose other name is the lanthanide series) was a hint. There are no elements whose names end in -ide, and the only name for this element is lanthanum. Protest denied.
* Round 10, Canadiana / Challenge * Pair E, Canadian Railheads * Question E1, "Name the only port on Hudson Bay served by Canada's main railway network" -- expected answer "Churchill". Elizabeth of What She Said? protested "Moosonee" for a steal. Moosonee is indeed on Canada's main railway network, specifically the Ontario Northland Railway. It's actually on the Moose River, which flows into James Bay a few miles away; and James Bay, of course, is an arm of Hudson Bay. We meant the only port directly on Hudson Bay, but we neglected to say so, and this is good enough. Protest accepted.
* Yet again Game 5 * Round 4, Sports: Rodeo * Question 5: "What is the only event in which partners are permitted?" -- expected answer "team roping". * Dale of Cellar Rats protested "bulldogging" for 2 and "steer wrestling" for 1. These are, of course, the same event, so the 1-point protest is moot. He says it requires two people. We denied the protest on the grounds that it doesn't. We were wrong. Only one person actually wrestles the steer, but as many web pages will confirm, he has a partner called a hazer whose job is to steer the steer in the right direction. Protest finally accepted for 2.
