Protests

Round 3 - TV in TV

Question 1: "This Bonnie Hunt sitcom features a fictional talk show called Morning Chicago"; Expected answer "Life with Bonnie".

Laura of All Over Twisted protested "The Bonnie Hunt Show" for 2 points vs. 1, stating that this was the title of the original pilot.

http://www.examiner.com/ex_files/default.jsp?story=X0917TVw is a review of the pilot episode, showing that the title "Life with Bonnie" was already in use. "The Bonnie Hunt Show" did exist, but it was a different series, also known simply as "Bonnie", that ran for 13 episodes in 1995-96.

It is true that both series are/were set in Chicago and starred Bonnie Hunt playing a character also named Bonnie who (fitting the theme of the round in each case) appeared on TV, but they are still unrelated; "The Bonnie Hunt Show" revolved around a newscast, not the fictional "Morning Chicago" talk show.

Protest denied.

Round 4 - Common Factors

Question 3 was: "Andre Dawson, Alfredo Griffin, Eric Hinske, Carl Morton"; expected answer "baseball rookie-of- the-year award winners on Canadian teams (acceptable if a specific Canadian team is given instead of 'Canadian')".

Jim of Unnatural Axxe protested "played for the Blue Jays" for 2.

The guidelines for the round specified that "QMs should accept answers that are overly specific, ask for 'more specific' where applicable, and be lenient on close answers. But, as usual, anything underlined is required." In this case "rookie-of-the-year" was underlined, and it was not provided even when "more specific" was asked. Besides, hundreds of people have played for the Blue Jays and Expos over the years, but only these four have been rookie-of-the-year while doing so, so this is clearly the “more notable” common factor.

Protest denied.

Round 5 - Anti-War Songs

Question 9, expected answer "Coven" (the song, "One Tin Soldier")

Frank of Five Guys Named Moe and Halsey of All Over Twisted both protested "Original Caste" for either 1 or 2. Stephan of Reach for the Tap protested "Terry Jacks" for 2 and "Poppy Family" for 1.

Although it was the Canadian band Original Caste that created this song in 1969, it was covered in 1972 by the US band Coven for the movie "Billy Jack". Both versions were Billboard Top 40 hits. While they do sound similar, Coven's version, which is indeed what we played, featured a single female singer (Jinx Dawson), while the Original Caste featured vocal harmony. Terry Jacks is a man, and as far as we can tell the Poppy Family (whose lead singer was his then wife Susan Jacks) never recorded this song.

If we'd been aware of the original version we'd either have used it or mentioned it in the question, but...

Protests denied.

Round 9 - Saintly Places

Question 5, "What do saints Casimir, Florian, and Stanislaus have in common (other than being male saints)?" -- expected answer "they are all patron saints of Poland", with "patron saints" underlined.

Ryan of 5 of 9 protested "they are all rivers" for 2 and "they are all bodies of water" for 1. He pointed out that there is a Stanislaus River in California.

The server http://gnpswww.nima.mil/geonames/GNS/index.jsp turns up a "stream" (i.e., river, creek, anything like that) called the Casimiro in western Uruguay; there's a Rio Floriano in Brazil near Iguacu Falls. So that covers all three.

Clearly this is both uninteresting (since there are so many bodies of water in the world) and not what we were looking for, but it's also clearly correct.

Protest accepted for 2.

Greg of What She Said? protested "they are all towns in Poland"for 2 and "they are all Polish" for 1.

There do indeed appear to be many towns in Poland named for these three saints.

Protest accepted for 2.

From game 5

We have changed our minds.

Round 4, Question 5: "What is the only event in which partners are permitted?"-- expected answer "team roping".

Ryan of 5 of 9 protested "steer roping" for 2.

"Team steer roping" is not a standard rodeo event, but we didn't articulate this requirement at the beginning of the round, and http://www.bentonrodeo.com/rhist.shtml and http://www.crookedcreekhorsepark-faha.com/rodeofacts.htm indicate that it is an event at some rodeos (and it does involve more than one person). Thanks to Ryan for providing extra information.

Protest accepted (on reconsideration)
