Protests

Round 1, Current Events

  * Question 1: "Of what country is Belgrade the capital?" -- expected
answer "Serbia and Montenegro". Cam of Reach for the Tap, Jane of
Unnatural Axxe, and Seumas of Cellar Rats all protested "Serbia"
for either 1 or 2 points.

It is true that Belgrade is the capital of Serbia: the question is, is Serbia a "country"? Under the Constitutional Charter Of The State Union Of Serbia And Montenegro, the union has a single army, a single immigration and border policy, and joins international organizations as a single member if their membership "is contingent on international personality". It is also the union and not its member states that has embassies in other countries. We therefore consider that although Serbia does have greater autonomy than when the union was known as Yugoslavia, it is still not a "country".

Protest denied.

Round 4, Herbs

Question 5, clue: "cultivated for its sweet aromatic roots since
the Middle Ages; used by Arab physicians as a laxative; popular
sweetener for confectionery, beers, and tobacco" -- expected answer
"licorice" or "sweet root". Lisa of Reach for the Tap protested
"anise" for 1 point, with the remark "same as licorice".

They are different species. Anise is pimpinella anisum; licorice is glycyrrihiza glabra. Furthermore, the two plants do not look at all similar, and hence anise does not fit the pictorial component of the clue.

Protest denied.

Question 6, clue: "an ancient dye and healing plant, fermented
leaves producing a blue dye eventually superseded by indigo.
Leaves were also traditionally used to stop bleeding and heal
the wounds of battle. If you saw the movie Braveheart, you will
have seen it used (perhaps anachronistically) on the faces of the
Scottish warriors" -- expected answer "woad". Barrie of MI5
    protested "bay" for 1 point, with the remark "name of the plant;
woad is name of the dye".

Woad (isatis tinctoria) and bay (laurus nobilis) are also different species. This immediately contradicts the basis for the protest; as well, we can find no indication that the bay plant is or has been used to produce a dye. Moreover, woad is inedible.

Protest denied.

Round 6, Multi-Sport Athletes

  * Question 6, "Michael Jordan wore which number for both the
Birmingham Barons baseball team, and for the Chicago Bulls at
the start of his first basketball comeback?" -- expected answer
    45. Jim of Unnatural Axxe protested 35 for 1 point.

From: http://www.barons.com/jordan.shtml

Facts on Michael Jordan's only season in baseball with the Barons in 1994: Wore # 45 for the Barons (number won for Laney (NC) High School baseball team)

From: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/nba/jordan/timeline.htm

March 18-19, 1995: Jordan and the Bulls announce that he will rejoin the team and be in the lineup for the next day's nationally televised game against the Indiana Pacers at Indianapolis. Jordan returns wearing number 45, the same number he wore for the Barons and as a basketball player in junior high school.

Protest denied.

Round 8, Space Travel

Question 2, "Gagarin was the first person in space, and Alan
Shepard was the first American in space. John Glenn later became
the oldest person in space, but what "first" did he achieve on
his first spaceflight, in February 1962?" -- expected answer
    "first American in orbit".

    * Hal of Cellar Rats protested "first man in orbit" for 2 points
    vs. 1.

As we said in a note on the question sheet, the first man in orbit was Yuri Gagarin.

Protest denied.

    * On the same question Stephan of Reach for the Tap protested
"first to make multiple orbits" for 1.

In fact Gherman Titov made 17 orbits in August 1961. Incidentally, Titov on this flight was also the first to experience spacesickness.

Protest denied.
